The global economy has collapsed and third world war has left the planet a dark and deadly place. Having a job is like winning the lottery. It is a rare and cherished thing. Society is split into two classes, the poor and the damned. Only one superstore remains in the city. The seven staff members work long hours for hardly any pay, but they are considered the lucky ones.

River is in love. He is in love with the woman of his dreams. Only she doesn’t know it. Ariel lights up his dark and lonely world. She is the reason he wakes up every single morning. Her friendship and company give meaning to his existence, but when job cuts are announced his world is turned upside down. The staff are given five days notice. By the end of the week three members of staff will be fired, but how far is River willing to go to ensure that the love of his life keeps her job?

With uncertainty and doubt fuelling the fires of fear each member of staff sets out on a dangerous path of deception. The flesh of the weak is food for the strong. It is a dog eat dog world. Friends become enemies. Lovers become deceivers. You can trust no one. You can rely on no one. You must do what needs to be done to make sure you survive. You must steal, you must betray and you must kill. Betrayal, deception and corruption have never looked so sexy.

Excerpt

Hope pushed the trolley down the tall dark dusty aisle. The stockroom was beyond big and it was darker than dark. Most of the other workers didn’t like being down here on their own because of the things that could lurk in the shadows. Of course Hope knew the only thing that lurked in the shadows down here was dust. It was out there in the real world that you had to be careful. This store was like a peace sanctuary. All those horrible and nasty people outside could never break in to this fortress of a super store. Of course Hope hated working alone. She liked being upstairs with the others. Not that she would join in with the conversations or anything, but it was nice to be around friendly banter. It made the world feel a little saner and reminded her how it felt like to be around her family. They were always talking and smiling and joking with each other.
Hope pulled the trolley to a stop and flicked open a cardboard box of canned food goods on the shelf. Reading the checklist for what was needed upstairs she carefully counted out four of the canned carrots and placed them into one of the boxes within her trolley. When she was done she folded the box up and returned it to its rightful place on the shelf.
            ‘You don’t seem too worried.’
Hope nearly jumped out of her skin.
She hadn’t heard anyone approaching her.
‘Michael?’ she breathe a heavy sigh of relief.
‘Sorry. I didn’t mean to scare you.’ Michael pulled out one of the larger boxes and sat his bulky body down upon it. It wasn’t rare for people to venture down to the stockroom from time to time to have a quick break. They all took it in turns just to make sure everyone could use to toilet or grab a quick bite to eat or cup of tea.
‘Its okay,’ Hope turned her eyes nervously to the floor.
She couldn’t help feeling shy around him.
There was something about a big strong black man that tickled her insides. She had contemplated asking him out for a drink sometime, but her thoughts and words never seemed to match. It was like no matter how much she psyched herself up she could never find the confidence to ask him out. Doubt always seemed to ask what a hot sexy guy like him would want with a skinny woman with very small breasts. Sometimes she wished she had been blessed with Ariel’s large chest. She always had men drooling over her boobs.
‘I was saying that you don’t seem too worried about the news.’
Hope shrugged her shoulders. ‘If I get fired I get fired. It is in Malcolm’s hands.’
‘The wrong hands,’ Michael muttered more to himself than Hope. ‘I am just saying you know how bad things are out there in the world. To have a job is one of the most amazing things anyone could ever hope to wish for. We are still dirt poor, but we are the lucky ones. How would you survive without this job? Where would you live? What would you eat? How would you get by?’
Hope was feeling very small right about now.
            Michael seemed upset.
‘I don’t know,’ she confessed. ‘I am just trying to do my job the best I can.’
‘I know,’ he sighed. ‘Who do you think is going?’
‘Oh, I don’t know,’ she evaded the question. ‘Who do you think is going?’
‘Alan, me and either you or Kerry is my feeling,’ countered Michael.
            Hope’s heart stopped.
He thought she would be fired?
